The Rebirth of MSAT G2

MSAT G2 Satellite Radio

The MSAT Push-To-Talk (PTT) Satellite Radio has become the most important Public Safety and First Responder satellite communication system and network in the country. This is a wonderful example of where our government has succeeded to serve the public interest over US corporate deal making.

With the public announcement that Ligado’s PTT Networks will not support interoperability with the newer MSAT G3 Network from Cobham and Viasat, not to mention other striking deficiencies, this basically puts the last nail in the coffin to the competing Viasat network.

The importance of the MSAT G2 cannot be overstated. Since its original launch in 1995/96 by AMSC (American Mobile Satellite Corporation), this communication network has grown to be the most important and robust Public Safety satellite network in the United States, providing seamless Radio Dispatch capability to every City, County, State, and Federal Agency that demands “one to many” broadcast communication.  The network does not depend on terrestrial infrastructure, which can be affected by catastrophic weather and earthquakes. It has been through this long and slow uptake to this technology that has created the most resilient, powerful, and reliable means to have interoperability between the many different public safety agencies throughout the country on one commercially available network.  No one can be left out or denied access to this network if their budgets can support the hardware and airtime network operating costs which are some of the lowest in the industry.

With these current turns of events, Ligado is rethinking its commitment to the importance of its US based emergency communications network and commitment to its growth and success for the years to come. Perhaps we might even see a new hardware design for the radio and antenna system in the future.

Remote Satellite Systems Inc Offers Interoperability

MSAT G2 Satellite RadioThe next great shift in satellites is interoperability. Iridium and MSAT are two of the largest satellite networks. The Iridium PTT service has been used by the military for several years, and now it is cleared for civilian use. The MSAT PTT is a similar service that provides real-time communication as a supplement to traditional two-way radio systems. Both of these voice based services give access to point-to-multipoint and point-to-point communication at the push of a button. Many emergency responders and government agencies operate on one of these networks.

However, calling between the different satellite networks has always been problematic, if not totally impossible. This doesn’t even take into consideration the high per minute cost. For the first time, we can connect people over separate satellite networks.

Resolving Your Communication Problems

Recently, we have eliminated the direct calling problems between the MSAT Push to Talk Radio Satellite Network and the Iridium Satellite network. Now state and local government agencies can make voice calls between these satellite networks with basic dialing methods.

For MSAT to Iridium your dialing string should include 011 + 8816 xxxx xxxx (12 digit Iridium satphone number) <SEND>

For Iridium to MSAT your dialing string should include 01 + (800 or 877 toll free area code phone number) <GREEN/SEND> An important note: these calls will not be toll free and standard Iridium airtime rates will apply.

It’s exciting to offer interoperability between networks for customers that previously were unable to communicate. Currently our interoperability is for voice calls between Iridium and MSAT networks. If you have any questions about the process or what this means for your organization, contact us directly. We’re happy to discuss the best communication options for your needs.

Iridium Satellite Launches Almost Complete

Iridium Satellite Launches Almost CompleteStarting in January 2017, Iridium began launching Iridium NEXT satellites into low Earth-orbit (LEO) to replace their aging satellite network. Many of the older satellites are no longer in active service, are partially functional, have tumbled out of control, or have reentered the atmosphere. The new NEXT satellites will form a second-generation global network of telecommunications satellites. In our previous blog post here we discussed the new network. The final plan will have 66 active satellites that will create a worldwide network that will improve user experience and data transmission.

The globe’s first truly worldwide broadband service.

They can also be utilized as a data link to other satellites in space, enabling control and command of other space assets regardless of the position of ground gateways and stations.

Iridium has contracted with SpaceX to launch their satellites into space, ultimately planning to send 75 satellites into space on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket over 8 different launches. 66 satellites will be in operation while 9 will serve as on-orbit spares, and there will be 6 on the ground spares as well. As of Spring 2018, 6 of the launches are complete and 55 satellites are in LEO. You can watch the exciting May 22, 2018 launch on YouTube here.

Iridium plans to begin providing service through Iridium Certus as soon as early 2020. The 66 satellites will blanket the earth with coverage, bringing reliable connections to many previously unreachable locations, including remote waterways where it is crucial for mariners to have service. Iridium is creating a world where it is getting easier and easier to stay online on the go. The NEXT satellites will provide global communications and data for individuals as well as emergency communications. It is exciting to be able to watch launches in real time and the dream of an interconnected world joined together by internet service become a reality. We can’t wait for Iridium Certus service to begin!
