IRIDIUM Phones

Iridium's satellite network is the communication network providing voice, paging, short text messaging (SMS), and internet access services to commercial and individual subscribers around the globe. Remote Satellite has handheld and fixed-site Iridium phone systems.

Iridium is a global telecommunications company which has launched a constellation of low-earth-orbit (485-miles high) satellites. The low-earth-orbit requires less power for communication with the Earth's surface, making it possible to use handheld satellite phones and to reduce communication delays. As of June 1998, Iridium had 72 satellites in orbit. Related communication services and products are provided by "retail" service providers who can establish a customer account for global telephoning and paging service and Iridium products and accessories.

The Iridium 9505/9505A is smaller, lighter and more resistant to water, dust and shock than original Iridium phone, Iridium 9500 phone. Iridium 9505/9505A Satellite phone is ideal for industrial or rugged conditions, yet appealing to the traveling professional.

Learn about Remote Satellite's Iridium satellite phone service. Iridium 9505/9505A functionality is almost identical to the 9500 with the addition of improved rubberized armor, an infrared data port, and an earpiece port. The Iridium 9505/9505A also dropped the 9500's older-style "flip lid" design. The internet access is 2400 bps (direct dial circuit switched) or 10,000 bps* with compression.

Includes: Iridium 9505/9505A, universal AC charger and international plug kit, high cap battery, mag-mount car antenna (with 1.5 meter cable), antenna adapter, DC charger, belt holster, hands free earpiece, and manual.

Options:external mast antennas (U-bolt and thread mount types), antenna cables, mag-mount vehicular antennas, high capacity batteries, ultra-high capacity batteries (9500 model only), external battery packs, watertight impact cases, portable solar chargers, and fixed-site Iridium phones for PBX applications.

Thuraya's mobile satellite services will provide users in 99 countries with superior flexibility and convenience. Dual-mode terminals will extend the reach of cellular users, enabling them to roam freely between urban areas served by GSM providers and outlying areas that can only be accessed using advanced satellite technology. Thuraya Satellite Comunication anticipates a customer base of 1.8 million people, many of them comprising the national and regional roamer segments of mobile phone users.

Thuraya's geo-synchronous satellite will provide border-to-border coverage to a footprint area of 99 nations. Thuraya's Remote Satellite Comunication Coverage will span Europe, North and Central Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. Thuraya's Remote Satellite Comunication Services will extend beyond boundaries of terrestrial networks and reach remote areas not accessible by conventional modes of mobile telecommunications. Thuraya's services will greatly enhance the region's telecommunications infrastructure by expanding the coverage area of existing networks and opening up new links to regions outside national terrestrial systems.

Thuraya's services will change the way people, travellers, and families, maintain contact with customers, associates and loved ones. Those living in remote and sparsely populated areas, currently under served by existing networks of communications, will be able to use Thuraya's services to link with the outside world. Additionally Thuraya's services will be ideal for those working in remote industrial sites and marine operations, relief projects, as well those involved in regional and international transportation fleets. Thuraya's dual mode (GSM and satellite) handsets will integrate terrestrial and satellite services, expanding the boundaries of local telecom providers and allowing customers to roam vast areas without service interruption or failure.

MSAT PUSH-TO-TALK RADIO

A network of one Earth Station in Reston , Virginia, and one satellite. MSAT 2 has 6 high-powered Spot Beams that provide Domestic North American coverage in the continental United States, Hawaii, West Indies/Caribbean, Mexico, and inter-coastal USA. Partial coverage is also provided in Alaska, Central America, the northern tip of South America. The satellite is in geo-synchronous orbit (GEO) above the equator at 110 degrees West, which means it is always in the same place in the sky.

INMARSAT Satellite Phone

A network of 24 plus Earth Stations and four active satellites, providing Global satellite coverage. The satellites are in geo-synchronous orbits (GEO) above the equator, which means they are always in the same place in the sky.

Inmarsat is a 62 member-country, internationally owned cooperative, which operates and maintains the network, satellites and all the earth stations. Inmarsat was formed over 20 years ago in order to facilitate communications to the commercial shipping and fishing industries. This is one reason why the Inmarsat network has major role with the International Maritime Organization, IMO, for required communication aboard certain class and type of boats and ships. The IMO approved Inmarsat systems have built-in Emergency Distress features, that can aid a vessel in distress.

Starting with a user base of 900 ships in the early 1980s, it now supports links for phone, fax and data communications at up to 64kbit/s to more than 210,000 ship, vehicle, aircraft and portable terminals. That number is growing at several thousands a month.

The Inmarsat business strategy is to pursue a range of new opportunities at the convergence of information technology, telecoms and mobility while continuing to serve traditional maritime, aeronautical, land-mobile and remote-area markets.

Keystone of the strategy is the new Inmarsat I-4 satellite system, which from 2004 will support the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (B-GAN) - mobile data communications at up to 432kbit/s for Internet access, mobile multimedia and many other advanced applications.

Inmarsat's Broadband Global Area Network – BGAN – is the world's first mobile communications service of any kind to provide both voice and broadband data simultaneously through a single, truly portable device on a global basis. It is also the first mobile communications service to offer guaranteed data rates on demand.

INMARSAT RBGAN Satellite Internet
RBGAN (Regional Bgan) AN INMARSAT NETWORK

RBGAN COVERAGE MAP

Launched at the end of 2002, Regional BGAN offers high-speed access to the Internet, as well as intranets and other private networks. Coverage stretches across almost all of Africa and Asia, including Indonesia and the western half of Australia.

The maximum bandwidth within each spot-beam is 144kbit/s. But because Regional BGAN is a packet data network, the average bandwidth available is shared among several connected users if they transmit data at the same time.

The Regional BGAN system allocates this capacity where needed - invisibly to the end-user. Based on Inmarsat's forecast of traffic and capacity, over a three-minute period we estimate users will consistently experience transfer rates equivalent to more than double those offered by current terrestrial GPRS services.

Other key benefits of Regional BGAN are:

  • 'Always on' access to the Internet, intranets and other corporate networks
  • Charges by the amount of data sent, rather than time spent online
  • Accessed via a lightweight, portable satellite IP modem
  • Plug'n'play PC connection

Fleet
AN INMARSAT NETWORK

Fleet F33 and F55 are the latest additions to Inmarsat's Fleet family of maritime services, designed to equip smaller vessels with voice, e-mail and secure Internet access.

Crews on small and medium-sized boats will now be able to run a mobile office at sea, complete with telephone, e-mail and Internet access, thanks to two new services from Inmarsat.

Called Fleet F33 and F55, the new services follow the successful launch of the first in the family of Inmarsat Fleet services, F77, in April this year.

Together, Fleet F33, F55 and F77 provide high-quality mobile voice and flexible data communications services for the maritime industry. Fleet F55 and F33 allow smaller vessels to benefit from voice, e-mail, secure Internet and intranet access, plus high-quality fax services.

The data rates available through Fleet F33 and F55 mean that a new, wider range of applications is available to the smaller vessel market. Maritime-specific information, such as sea and weather charts, can be made available online and updated in real time. Users can also enjoy the benefit of reliable, easy access to e-mail whenever and wherever needed.

The benefits of Fleet F33, due for launch in early 2003, include:

  • Clear, digital voice available virtually globally in all four of the Inmarsat Ocean Regions.
  • Two distinct data services available in Inmarsat spotbeam areas depending on terminal version
  • Enhanced 9.6kbit/s data offering high performance throughput, plus Inmarsat Mobile Packet Data, offering 'always connected' capability where users pay for the amount of data transferred and not the time spent online.
  • Small, lightweight antenna (similar to mini-M), offering increased ease of supply and installation.

Fleet F55's data service, on the other hand, will utilize the spotbeams on Inmarsat's satellites, providing up to 64kbit/s Mobile ISDN or Mobile Packet Data in those areas of the world covered. F55 voice services use the global beam to provide worldwide coverage.

The benefits of Fleet F55, due to be launched in early 2003, include:

  • Clear, digital voice available in all four Inmarsat Ocean Regions.
  • Two distinct services available in Inmarsat spotbeam areas: 64 kbit/s Mobile ISDN providing high-quality voice, group 4 fax, or high-speed voice band data service; or
    Mobile Packet Data
  • An "always on" Internet Protocol (IP) service, with charges by the amount of data sent and received, not the time spent online. This is very attractive for smaller volumes of data or interactive data sessions.
  • Relatively small lightweight antenna offering easy installation for smaller vessels.
